Many years ago (and in the oddest of all places - a college course on crime prevention through environmental design), I learned of the concept of latent and manifest functions and it seems to me that when it comes to Trump supporters the manifest functions (simply put, the sideshow) becomes the focus while the hugely more impactful latent functions (the hidden) go unnoticed.

Another example is policing and how cops tend to vote (Republican) and their dislike of unions (many actually call them a "benevolent" to escape the label of "union" - no shit).

But my point is, we cops have received all of our benefits and wages from the work of "unions" (and for those that disagree, look at what law enforcement offers are paid in "right to work" states versus non-right to work states).

But so many cop vote against their own economic self-interests all the time (hell, in Illinois we have Republican politicians that attack unions and the pension system constantly and cops keep voting for these people - now here is where our resident conservatives will point out the disastrous economic condition of Illinois and trot out the pension lies that people like Rauner, our rich governor, have been spreading).

But to me, it is like these people that support Trump have learned to love the kick in the teeth and will continue to do so.

One last thing, I had a visit with an uncle the other day and this uncle pointed out when it comes to economic interests people are so ignorant and used the current longing people are having for Ronald Reagan when in reality, he is the one that truly started all this erosion of the middle class and their economic interests and as a country we now long for him.....
