It was almost sad to hear Trump complaining in front of all those military people yesterday: Why aren't they doing this to Clinton?; it isn't fair!

It must be difficult for him to contemplate rebuking two strong men he appears to respect: Putin and Assad. Yet, under the circumstances, he might very well overact with the anger he's feeling toward the U.S. justice system.

Muller might have made a strategic move by referring the Cohen case to another jurisdiction, New York. If Trump fires him, the investigation in New York goes on. That all by itself may discover enough wrongdoing to cause impeachment.

When all this began, I felt a sense of relief: the candidate who should never have occupied the office to begin with will be outed. (I am not a Clinton fan.)

But as it is unfolding, I am torn in my reaction, from regretting that future students will need to read about a period in our history so opposed to the values that formed this country of the diversity and empathy that caused it to sacrifice so many lives to save the world from the creeping authoritarianism and hate displayed by those in power in Nazi Germany, Japan, and Italy during the second world war; to celebrating their anticipated pride in the system that got us through it all.

It is the latter I'm not so sure of. The political polarization and economic inequality that now defines our diversity and jeopardizes our empathy for each other threatens its existence, as we know it, in a way I've never seen before.
