What do these disparate things have in common? They don't work! But by all means, let's continue the
ridiculous, infantile chorus of "thoughts and prayers" in the wake of the recent mass shooting in Florida, and
the endless string that will inevitably follow. Thoughts and f****** prayers!
If thoughts and prayers didn't stop the genocides of the Jews and the Armenians, if they don't prevent
the 5-
7 million children under 5 years of age who die annually, if they don't prevent the millions of rapes that girls
and women suffer each year, then why don't the offerers of these empty gestures have the courage to admit
that these pathetic, cowardly bromides are a poor substitute for hard work and hard choices. Self-deception
is a mighty
psychological obstacle to overcome but the insight one gains by breaking the spell is worth it.
