Kent,

I think we are basically saying the same thing. Yes, many of the legal "drugs", including caffeine, are addictive and harmful.  I agree that the "persecution" of certain mind-altering substances in the "war" against drugs is ludicrous. The addiction tapestry is large, and extends to behaviors as well including sexual preoccupation, gambling, overeating, etc..etc...My bottom line is that the individual should have a choice of what or what not to put into their bodies and minds, and understand, if possible the consequences of their actions, be the fallout a health hazard, legal predicament etc..

Now, for the "final" word on the "gateway" nonsense, please, please listen to the words of the prophet..the one, the only , Mr.Lenny Bruce, on the subject, when he discusses marijuana, and one convicts' ultimate "gateway" to murder, arrived at in somewhat convoluted fashion from Sunday night Catholic Church Bingo games.....

Scroll down to the routine entitled, " I tried it once, it just gave me a headache", and listen.  Enjoy, I think he hits the nail right square on the head.
