I can't do this on Facebook because it actually requires me posting something
longer than "I just farted!" or "I'm having cake!"
Last night I watched the Republican debate. It was a total horror show. Yes,
the
candidates are ridiculous as was the tenor of the whole enterprise...with the
exception of Ohio governor John Kasich who honestly could not get a word in and
must have felt embarrassment having to stand on the stage with that group of
total wackos. Also Kasich has no shot at competing with the other clowns because
he often speaks like a thoughtful human being which seems not to cut through the
wailing lunacy of what appears to be the Republican candidates dialogue. The
general feeling expressed by CNN talking heads pre-debate was that this thing is
already over, Trump is going to clean-up in the upcoming primaries and people
like Carson and Cruz should already have suspended their campaigns. Honestly,
Carson and Cruz really should not have been on that stage, Carson made a rather
hilarious "fruit salad" comment that probably was one of the debate highlights
for me because it was so damn odd...but entertainment value aside you have to
wonder why the guy is wasting his time. Cruz obviously had to be there because
they were in his home state which he is in danger of losing to Trump in the Texas
primary which obviously would be the death of his campaign.
The whole way this "show" came off was utterly surreal. Trump was positioned
dead
center stage flanked on either side by his next closest rivals Marco Rubio (who
is the official candidate of the RNC) and Ted Cruz (who appears to be the dirty
diaper the RNC would like to dispose of ASAP) and then on the outskirts of these
three...basically at the margins where everybody seems to feel they belong...were
Carson and Kasich. The theme for the proceedings was laid out prior to the show,
Rubio and Cruz would take Babe Ruth type swings at Trump and Rubio would or
should attempt to also assist in driving the final nails into smelly old Ted's
coffin. I guess the hope of the GOP being that once they have narrowed the field
Rubio could gain ground on Trump because the votes would not be being split
between him and Cruz...and that somehow sanity among their voters might breakout
and they might see Trump...who the RNC literally hates...as the absolute freak
show he is.
Obviously the GOP wants Cruz out ASAP because they want Rubio to have some
sort
of shot at challenging Trump in some of these primaries. To that end the fix
seemed to be in to have the audience cheer Rubio wildly as he basically threw
aside any discussion of issues to instead launch all sorts of allegations and
accusations at Trump...as did Cruz...and they both got a big assist from the CNN
crew that was firing questions at Trump...who at one point actually complained
that everything seemed to be directed at him.
Adding to the weirdness was the wheelchair bound George Bush and his wife
Barbara
were present in what seemed to be, in an odd way, a confirmation of the idea that
Trump is an unwanted interloper who is, and this point was made before (slyly by
the RNC chairman) and during the debate, not a conservative and has no business
at any Republican event.
So quite honestly the "debate" seemed more an attempt to hack down Donald
Trump
and publicly state the RNC does not want the guy that is their leading candidate
to actually be their candidate.
So, it was a live televised hatchet job on Trump.
Trump looked and sounded ridiculous throughout the show and said exactly
nothing.
Granted he had to spend most of his time defending himself...but this is exactly
what he has asked for...and if he was not doing that he was attempting to fire
insults at his opponents and at the people asking him questions.
The general feeling this whole thing gave was the Republican party is in
total
disarray and that they are waging some insane war within their own party. It felt
like they should just completely pull out of the presidential election and
concede now to whichever Democrat wins the nomination. They don't have a
candidate.
Well, that's not true, they do have Hillary Clinton who is the one candidate
running that is basically close to what a Republican was prior to...oh I don't
know...1985. Or as she has been tagged a "neoliberal."
Christ, if Hillary would just switch parties she would be running the whole
show
for the Republicans.
What a mess!
Anyway, after that long introduction here is what I am wondering and I would
love
to hear what anybody reading this thinks...
Do you think there is a movement within the Republican party to intentionally
tank in the last couple and absolutely this election with an eye toward then
having the leverage and support to remake the party?
I mean it does not seem like an accident that they have done such an amazing
job
of setting themselves up to fail. I just don't believe in accidents that look and
feel this intentional.
Granted, the Republicans made their own bed inviting all sorts of fringe
wackos
to be the loudest voices in their party but I honestly can't believe they are
that stupid to not recognize right now they have set fire to anything they once
stood for and are not just turning the American people off to them but chasing
them
away in droves.
I know as a "liberal" I should be doing what so many others are doing and
dancing
on the grave of what once was the Republican party but the truth is...we had
these two parties for a reason and having two parties was meant to be part of the
idea of checks and balances in our system. I don't particularly see the
Republican party committing suicide as a good thing and yes, I know they did it
to themselves but I am not so certain how this will play out in the long run.
Do you guys feel we should just be pissing on the grave of the GOP or are you
hoping they remake themselves into an actual second party that is not being
manipulated by their worst elements?
