and saw two artists I've never really listened to all that much. On Wednesday it was Neil Young.
I'm not really a fan but there are a dozen or so songs that I've enjoyed over the years. Haven't
spent that much time going though his enormous catalog. I saw the show from a football field's
distance away. It was decent, not really all that satisfying, but his voice was in fine form and he
and his far younger band mates rocked with a lot of energy. Glad I went but once will suffice. The real surprise was tonight. I had heard of The Mekons for decades but only knew a few tunes.
Holy shit, this troupe of aging Brits rock like it's 1977 and punk was just breaking out. Great
humor, camaraderie, and playing. A bit of the Pogues with rousing singalongs. It's rare when you
don't know much of the music but it still connects and sweeps you up with it. I was shocked that
they would even come to Portsmouth, NH (of all places). A film just came out about them and this promo captured a bit of tonight's spirit. And being 5 feet
from the stage only added to my appreciation.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Hk_c6e7gv0Peter T.
