The Offense-o-Meter scale goes from 0 (no hint of offense being taken) to 100 (red in the face,
smoke from the ears, let's get a boycott going NOW) and everything in between. I think
individuals of all political persuasions fall all over this spectrum. We all know people who are just
living to be righteously outraged. I remember Christopher Hitchens saying in response to
someone who was offended, "Yes, but what's your point?". And I get that...to a point. But I'm not
from a group that has been and often continues to be oppressed. White, straight, male,
educated, and tall, very tall, (and yes, ruggedly handsome) afford me privileges that I haven't
earned. But, if I had grown up gay, a minority, female, or vertically challenged, I'd surely know all
too well the sting of prejudice and resent the opportunities that were not so readily available to
me. I'd be a hell of a lot closer to 100 than to zero. As I've grown older, and hopefully wiser, I've
better understood how I've been advantaged and how much work has to be done for those
who've been brutally discriminated against. As far as the Washington Redskins logo issue, Dale
and his family surely have a different perspective from the Native Americans shown in this recent
