Icon Sonic composition of today's music

After purchasing some decent headphones and ear buds sometime ago, I've seemed to notice that a lot of music artists are not taking advantage of today's capabilities as they used to, or is that just me?

To illustrate, I've made a playlist of over 80 songs that sound really good with headphones/ear buds (Riders on the Storm by the doors, Time of the Season by the Zombies, Simon and Garfunkel's Scarborough Fair, several Donovan songs, The Cars' Moving In Stereo, Patsy Cline's Crazy, among just a few). Some of these songs seem to tickle your ears with sound, like in Riders on the Storm, how the tinkling seems to even move in your ear.

Then, while listing to compilation music from sources such as CMJ, Under The Radar and American Songwriter, much of the new music out there, while crisp and clear and even sonically separated, it doesn't seem as if the artists are taking advantage of advances in sound as much as they could.

Or is this just me?
