I've been listening to a lot of stuff from The Hold Steady lately. I'll be seeing them in April as
they
promote their new CD. Their singer and lyricist, Craig Finn, has always been more than a little
obsessed with religion and substance abuse. Usually I prefer their rocking, more anthemic
singalong songs as their ace guitarist, Tad Kubler, is incredibly adept at producing the absolutely
coolest riffs from his Gibson. But this tune is more sedate, and really highlights the soul that this
band once had. It features their former keyboard whiz, Franz Nicolay. When Franz left the band,
the band was never quite the same. This song is from their magnificent 2006 disc, Boys and Girls
In America. I think everyone
should own it.
