I've followed Garland's career for 35 years, Dan, and one of his themes has been "race in
America". Garland is part black, white, and Puerto Rican and his experiences growing up in
NYC often make it into his music. During the late 80s/early 90s he was called "Buckwheat" by
a fellow patron at a Yankees game. The sting of that insult prompted him to explore race
more than ever and resulted in the album, Don't Call Me Buckwheat. I love it to death and
know it can be had for peanuts on-line. Here's "Hail Hail Rock 'N' Roll, great stuff, hope all
will lend an ear:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LvIkjn6nKYPeter T.
