There's more than a little to digest in the above link, Kathryn, but the former accountant in me always associates the term with the view that being "in the black" means finally achieving profits for the year. A lot of retailers are "in the red" meaning they've not yet achieved profitability for much of their financial year and they hope to finally make some money with the pre-Christmas sales that usually begin the day after our Thanksgiving. I know the two ladies in my household are doing their utmost to aid in this color transformation, much to my regret! Our local newspaper has featured a guy camped out in front of the Best Buy (consumer electronics retailer) for 4-5 days, just so he can save a few hundred dollars off of a big screen TV. The Walking Dead series isn't the only place where you can see hoards of brain dead folks wandering about aimlessly.
