Went last night to the premiere screening of the documentary 'Stories of me' - the autobiography of Paul Kelly. They had condensed over 300 hours of footage (interviews and archival TV performances with various bands) into 96 minutes. We got to see many of his siblings (he was the sixth child of 9, many of whom look like him), his two ex-wives, his 3 kids and lots of bandmates and friends. It gave a very interesting perspective into the man and what makes him tick. To me it was a little disjointed - darting backwards and forwards in time rather than being in a chronological order, but the film-maker explained that it was more about stories (hence the title) than going from birth to now. After the film screening, the man himself came on stage with his guitar and harmonica and played 3 songs from his new CD 'Spring and Fall' which came out here last week. Our copy arrived just in time for me to listen several times before we went to the movie and it was wonderful to hear the songs live - the man always reduces me to an emotional mess somehow. I love him. He then played 'Dumb Things' which was a fitting finale. This was followed by a short Q&A session with the film's director. All in all, a great experience and well worth the 900 km we had to travel to be there. Peter T. - we thought of you - you would have loved it!
