I think a brokered convention remains an interesting possibility--interesting because I find this stuff fascinating in general--but I think the possibility began to wane this week for the first time.

All across the country, supporters of Ron Paul have been the ones to linger longer at state caucuses and get themselves selected to be delegates to the convention. RNC rules that were changed for the 2008 campaign season in order to make things work in Mitt Romney's favor were studied and exploited by the Ron Paul people, and when it became clear that those people were actually a potential threat to the looming coronation of Romney as nominee, then certain people started to get a little agitated. Lots of dirty tricks involved--again, fascinating to watch this stuff in action.

For months now, Ron has regularly been drawing crowds of enthusiastic supporters that number in the thousands, speaking to packed houses, people practically hanging from the rafters and chandeliers; meanwhile Romney has been speaking to much smaller crowds, doing that bland perp-walk style stumping that he does. 'Net Reporters filming Ron tend to pan out over the crowd to show how many heads are there; mainstream reporters filming Romney tend to use extremely tight shots so you can't tell that there aren't many people in attendance--or that the ones who are there aren't particularly enthused.

Last week, Ron's son Rand came out with what looked like a grudging show of support for Romney, and Ron's supporters went ape. For nearly a week, Ron didn't appear to have much to say about that or anything else (a rarity for the guy) and then this past weekend he released an eight-minute Youtube video urging his supporters to remain calm and respectful at all times. And then it was announced that a team of lawyers would be more or less taking over the campaign, beginning by suing the RNC for its tactics in attempting to squelch the efforts of Ron's supporters.

Fascinating stuff, to me. I am very curious to see how it all pans out. I'll make a prediction below.

Odd to me that the article you linked to barely touched on what the reason for the potential of a brokered convention really is. It isn't Sarah Palin.

Herring405 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Prediction: Can't imagine that Ron Paul will actually swing the nomination, even with a brokered convention. Romney will be nominated. But, as it is clear that there is no way on Earth that the party will be able to get the voting population to "love" this cold fish Hermann Munster "say whatever it takes to get the vote" guy, then it should be equally clear that the Republican strategy to get him into the White House will involve, instead, focusing on getting people to hate, hate, hate, its current occupant. That is going to make for one mean season of sad days.
