I find Chuck Berry exceptionally boring. And Little Richard certainly has charisma, but his music is like
a one-trick pony to me. Those two and Elvis benefitted tremendously from fate: 1. They recording near the beginning of recorded music and at a time when wide distribution and
owning of playback devices became normal.
2. Berry and Presley rode the wave of electric instrumentation, making a relatively simple sound seem
new and exciting. All three had wonderful lead voices, and that certainly helped. But to me, there was far more important
music being made in both jazz and bluegrass circles during the 1950's. This would include Miles
Davis' late 50's efforts, much of Bill Monroe's output with Jimmy Martin, some spectacular Dizzy
Gillespie works, and the best of the Flatt & Scruggs catalogue. To me, all four of those represent a
much higher level of achievement in American music. The first rock artist that really bends my ear is
Brian Wilson with the Beach Boys.
