Recently two police officers were killed while trying to arrest a "seasoned" criminal. Seasoned being he had a rap sheet that started when he was 14, a year younger than the age his mother was when she gave birth to him. He now is dead at the age of 22. I doubt he had any thought of whether he was even going to come out of the gun battle he began or not. Unfortunately, he seems to have been a very good shot.
