Well said, Ed.

As one who knows those coasts, I am beyond grief at the thought of losing them, and that doesn't even begin to approach the staggering, fundamental reality of actual lives that are directly affected in the now--birds, crabs, fish, gators, grasses, insects, microbes, and of course those humans whose lives, livelihoods, & lifestyles depend on the presence and continued health of all that, which eventually expands out to include us all.

But maybe some diety will "miracle" all this oily glut away. We can always hope.

I was torn this week, as the time to make a personal (very small-scale by comparison) decision came about. Do we go ahead and do the vacation on the island that is about to be hit by this spill, as has been planned for months, or not? On the one hand, we could sit on the beach waving to the hazmat teams and national guardsmen resolutely trying to berm, boom, and gate the area, perhaps teaching the children the proper way to scrub down an oil-drenched tern while surrounded by thousands of dead jellyfish and the occasional oily manatee--or go someplace else?

I just don't think I'm ready to expose the kids of the families involved to the kinds of weeping that would be involved. I'm voting for someplace else. But that is of very small concern.

With this disaster, haven't we just shown the world how best to hit us, should someone choose to do so? What happens when some "true believer" or group of such decides to detonate a half-dozen of these platforms at the same time?

Where is the leadership that will begin to wean us from big oil? Where?

The mind reels and staggers and cannot find the rail.
