Damn, Reg, that hit a little too close to home. Except it was a Nintendo controller...
I don't think the advent of digital recording is the only technological change that contributes to the sterility. A lot of instruments went digital in the 80's, especially drums. Even if the drums were only used as a guide track for the real deal, the subtle differences in time and tempo that result from a real person whacking a real drumhead with a real stick are what distinguish actual fire-breathing rock & roll from the Yamaha-driven nu-wavish stuff we began accepting in the 80's. When ever downbeat is exactly the same interval apart, it just feels wrong.
