I am married to a French woman so have spent many weeks in France the last many years...

I would say that you should always book in advance for a ferry....

I am not sure of the north, as my wife's family is in the south, but France is a pretty big sized country with quite alot to see. If it were me, I would focus on Paris, and if you have kids, Disney.

Have a great time! The French are an interesting lot, try to speak the language as much as you can and be polite and they will likely treat you well. Speak English only and leave your best manners at home at your own peril...
