I agree about Stand By Me, Shawshank Redemption, Secret Window, …all flicks worth
repeating, but there’s an exception to the King short story rule; The Green Mile began as
a series (or serial) until King deemed it novel material, then adapted by Frank Shawshank
Redemption Darabont. I like The Green Mile a lot; dig the story, the characters, and it’s
a further example of David Morse’s subtle…strong character acting.
Regarding James Elroy: An occasional mood for Elmore Leonard’s style keeps Freaky
Deaky on my desk just to open it up and read a chapter every now and then (a memento
of better American decades) and Blood Meridian was compelling enough to want to give
The Road a try, so I’ll take your advice and put Elroy on the reading list. I’ve read about
his staccato style, though, which I may not be able to get into … gota have a little verse
