I can attest to the same thing--nobody was requiring much reading at all in the high school I attended, and the very idea that one would read a Russian novel . . . well that's just silly! We were led on a decidedly unscholarly traipse through Hawthorne's THE SCARLET LETTER, but it was pretty easy to get through that experience without actually reading the novel (and it was pretty clear that the teacher had never read it with understanding). We also had the requisite amounts of Poe and Shakespeare. But no Russians.I discovered Fyodor on my own, thankfully. And then lots of others. And now? I DRIVE the bus!!!!
