William Gay - I'm reading his collection of short stories called I Hate To See That Evening Sun Go Down and really like it. I've also read his novel Twilight. Very good. Like McCarthy, Gay has a way with the printed word.
Larry Brown is pretty good too. Just finished Big Bad Love (another short story collection). Lastly, one more writer with style is Pete Dexter. I can't figure out why this guy is not more well known. The Paperboy and Brotherly Love are so haunting. Especially The Paperboy.
