Today I walked down to the lake and fished for several hours.

I've been doing this nightly for weeks now, as the bass have just started biting, and the bluegill are hungry, and if nothing else, you can always catch mudcats, and some day I hope to bring up a channel cat (though I've not seen one in this lake yet--they're there!!).

One of the best moments in this particular trip was when I felt a huge tug on my line. I knew right away I'd latched onto a really nice bass, so I got going with the reel, keeping tension on the line, all that.

About 2/3rds the way into shore, I could tell this was something too big to get in without the net, so, keeping tension on the line, I crabwalked to the "fishing wagon" (it once was the kids' wagon; now it holds fishing supplies and the inevitable beer cooler) and grabbed the net.

When I started reeling again, I saw what was on the line.

The lure I was using looks like a young crappie, though there are no crappie in our lake. For some reason, this has been a particularly potent lure out here though. It seems to score when others don't. The lure features a treble hook slung from its bottom, and a single hook mounted up from its back.

On this particular cast, what made the fish feel so heavy was that it was large, by this lake's standards . . . 3 pounds or so by my unscientific estimation . . . AND IT WAS ACCOMPANIED BY ANOTHER FISH! A second bass, roughly the same size, was caught on the same lure!

Of course, netting both at the same time proved to be a chore. One fish did flop off and escape, but I kept the other one for a while in my basket, before eventually scooting him off into the water so I could catch him again some day.

I caught about 15 fish in a few short hours, enjoying myself with no distractions. I used the casting net to finally see what kinds of bait fish were out there, but didn't find anything conclusive. I did find what appear to be two different species of perch--one being Bluegill, but the other I'm not at all sure of.

And by the way . . . that lure I mentioned? It is my new favorite. It is what I now call my . . . (wait for it) . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Weapon of Bass Destruction. . . . . . . . . . Herring405 (glub!)
