& yet it appears ... that’s just the way things are.   

Not “just,” but the way things are.  So what remains is

…what to do?   The fox, the bull, the fabled hill-bred lion,

the day laborer Cleanthes, the philosophers’ tome, the giant-

armed boy without a home, n the millionaire on paper o-

blivious to the whole or unholiness of his condition,

the flatterer for income, the rouser for truth & idle,

the penchant to be here & now & yet away a while,

the fortress, the cardboard boxes there in dim sorrow,

the lady with the antique hat  & lost eyes  & rotting smile,

the sons of laborers, the daughters of princes, the cat below

the birdbath, belly fed yet pangs remain, her hunger for the kill;

the dirty window facing future and the freshly painted windowsill

Still there daunting above & below every field of vision: paradox.
