That is an extremely effective ad, Reg,: it's simple, yet emotionally powerful, and it and will undoubtedly turn many viewers off to McCain. But is it disingenuous? Does it fully present McCain's statement? I don't think so.Here is what he said: At a town hall meeting in New Hampshire, a crowd member asked McCain about a Bush statement that troops could stay in Iraq for 50 years."Maybe 100," McCain replied. "As long as Americans are not being injured or harmed or wounded or killed, it's fine with me and I hope it would be fine with you if we maintain a presence in a very volatile part of the world where al Qaeda is training, recruiting, equipping and motivating people every single day."If the point is to win the election at all costs, then I guess it's a terrific ad. Clipped quotes, and half-truths have already started flying, and I don't know if I have the stomach to watch it for the next five months (from either side). And as to McCain's view, I cannot envision an Iraq that squares with what he longs for: too much religious hatred to ever allow for that fantasy. I've said all along, the sooner our troops depart, the better. Peter T.
