Has anybody seen this film? Roger are you out there? I figured if anyone had watched this maybe you had. I watched it a few days ago and it's been stuck in my head. It's a black comedy about the end of the world which is an obvious tip of the hat to Dr. Strangelove. In this film the Strangelove character is played by Wallace Shawn, not that I'm saying this is a rip off of Kubrick but it is certainly very influenced by him. Tales references all sorts of stuff though from Kiss Me Deadly (the 50's atomic noir) to Revelations, Karl Marx, Bushco, alternative fuels, fame, Hollywood in general and the list goes on and on. It sort of spends so much time winking at this and that it may really irritate some people, like the audience that watched it at Cannes...they hated it and ripped it to shreds. I found it pretty interesting though and I liked how Richard Kelly (the director of Donnie Darko, which he also salutes in this film) tried to get all these ideas into one film. Of course it's not meant to be just the film, there are actually three graphic novels you are supposed to read before watching the film. They make up the first three parts of this long and twisted tale and the film represents the final three parts. I have not read the graphic novels and I don't think you have to read them to understand the film but my guess is the film would seem a lot more coherent if you had read them.

Anyway, I'd love to hear your thoughts on this if you have seen the film.

One rule though, if you have seen it and you do post about it don't piss people off by giving away plot points and all that. In an open post just tell us if you liked it or didn't like it and general thoughts. I don't want to upset anybody who wants to see this. If you want to discuss specifics of the film please PM me because I have not been able to discuss it with anybody and that would be great. Let's not spoil it for others though.

I do recommend the film to everybody here because it covers the ground we often cover on this board in some pretty funny ways.
