The biggest thing I get from the article, though, is just how wretched the tribal-based Iraqi society is. These attitudes didn't just show up after 2003. It seems clear to me that if the author had talked to Shiites living under Saddam, he would have gotten a similar story. I'm not writing that to justify the invasion. It's just that the greater Iraqi nation doesn't hardly seem worthy of any sacrifice on our part. The article also seems to indicate that Iraq is at least 2-3 generations away from getting clear of this mess.Maybe this is just frustration getting out.
