Interesting.

I recall reading a history of Rome a couple of years back, which made the point that the reforms leading toward greater freedoms and governmental participation for certain parties (non-Romans from conquered territories, for example), as well as greater ownership of the fruits of one's own labor, were many, and would ebb and flow depending upon the historical circumstances.

Many a "revolution" occurred, but in a sense, they were all one revolution, as were the ones to follow in later societies.

It occurred to me that this must have been why Marx chose to write of the "Spectre" of international socialism. What is a spectre, after all, but a vision that recurs again and again?
