Hey Kevin,

Yeah, Din Of Ecstasy was a real slap in the face to those of us who loved the first album. A few of the songs grew on me...slowly...but I agree that he can be frustrating for a fan.

His last Columbia album, Terra Incognita, is different from either of the first two. Moody and atmospheric. Not as accessible or melodic as the first album, though. He then released Dirt Floor, recorded solo in a log cabin, which is great if you like that kind of thing. A live album and a covers disc followed that; I've never listened to either all the way through.

But Rocket House--released on Dave Matthews' ATO Records--is fantastic. It doesn't sound anything like his previous releases, so if you're looking for Living With The Law II you may want to skip it. But the songwriting is superb, and the production is interesting without going over the top. If you're going to download before you buy, I'd seek out "Radar," "Chain," and "Say Goodbye."
