There's also a very highly recommended article in the October National Geographic about alternative fuels.  It covers a lot of ground, including the pluses and minuses of corn-based ethanol vs. other types of biofuel. 

Sometimes obscured in this is just how much quiet investment is being done in this area by major private energy companies . . . names that you would all recognize.
