I drove five hours yesterday to see one of my musical heroes, Mick Thomas, in an Aussie Expat Bar in Lower Manhattan. I can't imagine the distance between audience and performer being any shorter. I sat in a dingy basement bar with fewer than a dozen audience members. And there was this incredibly agitated Cujo-like Australian border dog that literally charged at Mick and the rest of us after each song's applause. Talk about a tough crowd. Anyway, it's a rare night when you get 20 songs from 5 feet away, and 40 minutes of conversation after the show, all for $10. Give a listen to any of Mick's myspace songs, perhaps you'll join the club.PS: If there's a more intense place than New York City, I haven't experienced it.
