ah.thanks for posting that wikipedia quotation, gene. i was afraid that i would have to provide that sentiment myself... being the only alaskan who frequents these parts.many alaskans do, indeed, have that view. although there are plenty of alaskans who live in the "big cities" of fairbanks and anchorage who are not the hardy breed you might imagine to be an alaskan.i myself have now left the big city of fairbanks, and i'm living along the lower kuskokwim river in the village of aniak. we have no movie theatre in this village of 600, and i JUST MISSED the big alaskan premiere of the film in fairbanks... so i don't know when i'll get to see it.as hinted in your comments, though, krakauer did quite a job of "hollywoodizing" the story. i loved the book, too. i read it while driving up the alaska highway in 96. but (and i haven't read it since then) krakauer really mythologized mccandless.which is why the film got made.wfb
