Try the Standells, Flaming Groovies, the Cramps, Fear, The Weirdos, Iggy Pop, Berlin-era Bowie, The Decembrists, Deaf School, The Kinks, especially their hated concept albums, Jacques Brel,particularly the live stuff, Brecht/Weill done by Lotte Lenya, Springsteen's "Nebraska" album, Blind Willie Johnson's "Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground." A lot of Lou Reed, some Gershwin....
