I just read that Monopoly was originally designed by its creator (a Quaker) as a cautionary tale against
unbridled capitalism. What we need right now (along with a Manhattan Project-sized investment in
alternate energy) is some serious trust-busting. The oil industry needs to be nationalised, and its
profits turned to providing alternatives. The media conglomerates need to be broken into a thousand
pieces. War profiteering should carry a life sentence. Tax laws need to be rewritten to encourage
middle-class energy entrepreneurialism. Every able-bodied American should have an opportunity to
participate in the coming alternate energy boom. And every non-able-bodied American should be
guaranteed a decent place to lie down at night. Purchasing or selling political influence should carry
a minimum ten-year sentence. Investigative citizen journalism should be taught in the public schools. And pigs should fly.
