My jolly little exchange with that schmuck below reminded me of how much I love Sparks. I used to
see them at the Whiskey back when I was a teenager. God they were fantastic. Sparks, Deaf School,
the Tubes, and the Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo... There was this wild strain of theatricality in
those days, sort of in the uncomfortable bridge period between the dreary Boston/Journey/Kansas
school and the more rollicking if somewhat darker days of the Sex Pistols, the Clash and such. I was
roadying for an amazing band called the Weirdos at the time. The Mael Brothers went to my high
school, and Russell, the singer, was if you can believe it, a major football star. And I mean American
football, which usually isn't so kind to fragile, Baudelaire-spouting types such as he. Ahhh, the
Whiskey was so much fun in those days.
