Up top I posted a video of the acting Attorney General (the same one who gave Patrick Fitzgerald such sweeeping investigatory powers) telling the tale of how he, his security detail, some armed FBI agents, his top aides, and the Solicitor General (another surprising hero of the moment) prevented the White House from bullying a severely ill Ashcroft into signing off on something so heinous that it could not even be discussed...
