Kenny Wayne Shepherd just did an interesting project called "10 Days Out" where he, along with Chris Layton & Tommy Shannon (Double Trouble, for anyone not certain) went to the hometowns of some of these older, much lesser known, blues artists (along with a few that are known, like BB King, Gatemouth, Pinetop, and Hubert Sumlin), played with them, and recorded both audio and video. The package comes with a DVD and CD and is an excellent overview of some of these underappreciated artists and features some amazing playing.

If you're not into Kenny Wayne or think he's not legit, try it with an open mind. He's got a real appreciation for what came before. He's one of the newer batch of white blues players, along with Jonny Lang and Joe Bonamassa, that don't always get much respect in the Blues establishment.

I also heard that Carey Bell passed away last week. Great harp player and left some killer tracks behind. Never got to see him live tho. These older folks are starting to leave us. Gatemouth is gone, RL Burnside is gone, BB is 80 and still touring with diabetes....amazing, Hubert is 75, Buddy Guy is 70 (saw him last summer, like a man 1/2 his age).

There are also some documentaries out there about artists on the Fat Possum label. One is called Hill Stomp Hollar and the other is You See Me Laughing. Both feature a number of Fat Possum's artists and are real interesting if you like their brand of mostly raw Delta blues.

Not to go off on too much of a tangent, but Fat Possum just reissued some Townes Van Zandt stuff, and I saw also has a new release by Dinosaur Jr.
