Well, these 244 demos are exactly as you'd describe--all bare-souled and crazy. If we'd put those out we'd have saved a hell of a lot of money. In all reality, these are amazing for me to listen to, not only for how on the surface all my emotions were, but for the simple elegance of Dave's approach to production. It's easy to forget these days how painstaking one had to be in those days about getting anything done... You had three tracks to record on, and one to bounce a submix to. So for instance, you record drums, bass, and guitar, bounce those three tracks to one track, record a vocal and a keyboard, bounce down, and etc... If you make a change in key or structure or anything, you have to do the whole thing over again. Really remarkable, and he taught himself!

I think also partly it's the relationship between his cool head and my hot one that give these demos such an interesting dynamic.

I think Dan and I have worked out what we need to do to get these things up and running. It's 6:30 AM in LA, and as soon as I drink some coffee, I'll see what I can do about this last bit of technical whizbangery and get some of those demos up.

And watch Gonzalez shine in the light.
