…for those who’s nucleus family is mom & pop & two kids, have u ever split off into pairs and taken vacation? It’s something we’ve done for a few years now. Usually we hold two weeks a year out for vacation, around spring break & around summer (when we think we may get to watch the dolphins in the surf which is no less than a blessing ~ or be out among them which hasn’t quite happened yet, incidentally, & we’ve heard both pros & cons about the experience), for one week we split into pairs and the other we vacation together. I won’t rave on about it, but this allows for mutual vision quests, chipping away at any of the barriers that may have grown over the year or just one-on-one time for really getting to know each other, especially if a road trip is in the offing (like last year when Hawk & I drove out around Assateague Island way for a few days together.) My point in sharing is …well, it’s a far better bonding scenario than I ever knew as a kid in my father’s house. & if you plan a bit you can make it an uninterrupted purifying or vision quest set of circumstances for parent-progeny. Then there’s also that absence makes the heart grow fonder adage.
This year, OceanEyes and Hawk are in the California High Desert while Cat & I stayed back. The key for me is to keep it a vacation even though there’s work related prep & landscaping & tinkering in the garage, etc. to do. So we’ve gotten in a whole heck of a lot of ping-pong, pool (billiards), basketball, riverside hiking, tennis, DVD & Cinema, ball & glove, disc golf, late night poker & XBox, kite flying, dining out & eating in, some light reading or just lying back on the “big” bed beside the Jacqueline Penney lithograph, looking up at the ceiling fan and talking about stuff (Cat is 14, all he needs is an activity to be happy). We got just a tiny bit lost on a hike today & ultimately added a couple miles to the trek…which ended up being a blast really.
After playing one giggling set of tennis under sunny/windy skies & 48° (fun but chilly), we were driving home this evening & Cat, iPod in hand, controlled the mix (as usual. He’s got excellent taste in music…therefore he’s DJ anytime he wants the job.) I ruffled his freshly cut hair and enjoyed the music…& for some odd reason thought of the dbis.
So, FWIW…, just because it felt good n right in the warm sunshine of a heated Chevy on the way home from the park, here’s the 4 songs he booted-up for us:
