It's the critic that sounds weird to me. It seems to me that he's projecting his own little inner demons onto that flick. I don't think it was ever intended to be that subliminal and if it was, nobody would get it. Where in the hell did you read that review?
Anyway, I hang out sometmies in a car club forum that's chock full of guys anywhere from 16-50 (most of them 20's and 30's). They have been going to see this since the moment it came out and have anticipated it for some time. So far, they've all concurred that it was worth the price of admission at the very least and many of them loved it. I haven't seen it my self yet, but I plan to. Be warned, it's basically just a blood and guts fantasy film for the most part. In other words, I'm sure it was intended precisely for the Van Halen fan base type. No intellect necessary. But from what they've been saying, the cinematography and effects are excellent. And that demographic certainly has the market cornered on that kind of film.
