"As to air pollution, every place is not LA or Denver or China"

I don't understand your point. It's not like the air pollution stays in those cities...

Have you been to China? My travels have only taken me to Guangzhou and Shanghai once each (so far) in the last 6 months, but they are the two most polluted cities I've ever been to, bar none. Worse than Mexico City, Juarez, LA, anywhere I've ever been. What makes them so bad is that--according to the locals--there has been so little regulation until lately that no one really knows what's been released into the air and water. Parts of Shanghai literally smell like the inside of a sewer main. The air quality is so bad that I could feel my lungs getting coated with the gunk after about 9 days. Even full sunlight in January doesn't really cast a shadow.

Cancer rates in China are increasing exponentially. Birth defects are way up. There are many many more negative aspects to air pollution than the impact on the atmosphere, and those impacts are probably with us to stay.

And as far as dragging children into an argument...Every argument about environmental issues, public policy issues, economic issues, etc. should START with children. I had always hoped that my generation would be the first to actually implement some policy with future generations in mind. I guess not....
