Nah, you're not old. It's impossible to get to everything. I read John O'Hara's Appointment in Samarra last year and was stunned at how much it is a book of its time--along with Gatsby, etc. I knew Fred Exley a little. His town was my town. A Fan's Notes starts very near the house I grew up in. Fred's gone now, but I did make the mistake of drinking with him one evening. Most drinkers--myself included--look like 7th Day Adventists compared to him. Lordy.It is a very good novel, a book much emulated on so many fronts.
