I expected Pat or Dale to break this red herring out...
She is of course responding to David Preager's rant about Congressman elect Ellison's alleged desire to take the oath of office on the Koran - Let me destroy that particular straw man.
Let's ignore for the moment that this whole thing reeks to high heaven (Intentional) of religious intolerance and Muslim bashing.
- I have yet to read any reliable source that Ellison made any statement to that effect.
- The Constitution only specifies that congress take an oath to respect the Congress and uphold the constitution - No book, religious or otherwise is specified.
- The oath is administered en mass to the entire body, no book, religious or otherwise is used.
- After the oath is administered, there is a photo op with each congressman and the supreme court justice who administered the oath - the congressman may use a book for the picture, but no oath is administered at that time.
Even if you accept Praeger's charge as true, would you regard an oath taken on a book that had no religious significance to you as sacred, or even binding?
You can now stop ignoring that this whole thing reeks to high heaven of religious intolerance and Muslim bashing.
