Saw it. And you're right, it's chilling. I read recently that they finally put a marker over the location of the bunker which was filled up - before the marker, people couldn't find it. I guess there's a parking lot nearby or something.

The thing is that when the end was clear, even then Hitler didn't give up, and wanted to have people shot for disobeying his orders. He would have driven his men over a cliff if it had come to that.

Blind belief in someone or some political view is just plain stupid. But I see this all the time, especially with the Rush Limbaugh/Sean Hannity supporters. I mean, Rush picked on Michael J. Fox merely for opposing Bush's position on stem cell research. These people see it as more than simply a philosophical difference of opinion. They see it as an attack on Bush. When people get this blind, especially over matters of science and ethics, one really has to wonder.

Woody Allen tackled this subject in his film Zelig. Zelig was a man who changed his characteristics to suit whomever he was around. If he was talking to a doctor, he becamse a doctor. If he was talking to a black, he started to look black. Woody explained that there are certain people who don't have the conviction to say what they mean. For example, a person might be asked by one person about a film and the guy will say, "I loved it." When in the company of another person who says he hates the film, the guy will say, "yeah, you're right, it wasn't that good." Woody said that this sort of sheep-like behavior, taken to it's logical conclusion, results in Nazi fascism.

We all know about Nazi Germany, but perhaps we haven't fully learned the lesson. Perhaps we should spend more time examining how a person like Hitler was able to command such unwarranted blind devotion lest we make the same mistake in the future.
