My understanding is that "12" was not set to music, just as "Dogs in the Kitchen" was not set to music on Captain Fantastic.  However, the other track is available.  My initial thought in reaction to your comments is that people have had 31 years to digest the original album and squeeze from it meanings that may have eluded us for years.  I think that while some allusions are obvious, such as the "Your Song" intro chords which seem to be played at the end of "The Bridge," or the obvious references to record albums within the lyrics, I also think that less-obvious hidden-meanings will emerge over time.  For example, at the time, Taupin denied such hidden meanings, for example references to Nixon, a la "Madman Across The Water," or "Honky Chateau," (literally "White House") now days he is upfront about it with the first track being titled "Postcards From Richard Nixon."  Perhaps that's because we don't really have another 31 years to figure out who the postcards were from ... so he just told us up front this time.  The first album was about dealing with failure through fantasy while the new album is about dealing with success with a dose of reality.  All in all, I think it's a rather good attempt at completing a song-cycle from an autobiographical album that told only half the story.
