“A more certain way to attack religion is by favor, by the comforts of life, by the hope of wealth; not by what reminds one of it, but by what makes one forget it; not by what makes one indignant, but by what makes men lukewarm, when other passions act on our souls, and those which religion inspires are silent. In the matter of changing religion, State favors are stronger than penalties.” - The Spirit of the Laws, Baron de Montesquieu (1748)
So either this guy is talking about imposing a democracy or
paying out money to a country (extortion) where as history has shown never gets to the people. In either case for the radical element it would not matter because they are born and bred homicidal maniacs
Several years ago I read "Balkan Ghosts" by Robert D. Kaplan. One of Kaplan's assertions was that these long multi-generational tribal wars will continue until people have an economic stake in the future.
In other words the establishment of economic opportunity, stability, and a "middle-class", if you will, are an effective way to get people to move past and through their animosity and hatred.
Simple? Too simple? Maybe so. But the conditions under which the Palestinians live are ripe for desparate measures and suicide bombers. If people have homes, communities, jobs, a few amenities, and some security they are much less inclined to pick up a gun or bomb and go after their neighbors.
I suspect they are much less susceptible to the manipulations of religious dogma as well, though looking at the viewership of the 700 Club I'm not so sure.
Excellent post GM.
