Kervo,
Let's assume you're right and that the only reason the US (and 10 or 12 other nations) went to war was for the oil and to protect our national interests which are greatly dependant on foreign oil. We are a huge, gas guzzling nation. But until someone pulls the stick outta their ass and finds an alternative we will continue to be dependant on foreign oil if we want to maintain our standard of living. I don't like it either but, for now, they're all we've got. We're nothing more than hostages and they know it.
But now imagine this country without this oil. EVERY aspect of our lives and our livelyhood would be impacted negatively; gas would be $4-$5 a gallon, heating oil would be $3-$4 a gallon, people couldn't afford to do anything or buy anything other than the necessities (food, power, heat). Businesses would have to raise their prices accoringly to offset the huge increase in their production costs. If you think this current recession is bad, imagine what the inevitable depression would be like. It would make the depression in the late 20's look like a picnic.
We do need to find alternative sources of energy; fast. But right now all we have is this relatively high standard of living due to the availability of "cheap"oil. Without it, this country become medieval. I respect your opinion and agree we need to become less dependant on foreign oil. But it can't be done overnight and it can't be done at the expense of our already fragile economy.
Just my $.02...
