i thought Eiger Dreams was great.

but it was a long time ago. i don't remember too much. i do recall some of the specifics of krakauer's account of the devil's thumb. when i read it, i'd just moved to alaska, and similar trips seemed right around the corner for me. that was 10 years ago, though, and the mountains are far away now.

a cool, lyrical companion to Into the Wild is the book krakauer devotes many pages to: Everett Ruess - A Vagabond for Beauty. when i read it 10 years ago (from the library), i thought it was way out of print, but there are lots of used copies at amazon, i see... it's not the page-turning narrative style of krakauer, though.
