i thought Eiger Dreams was great.but it was a long time ago. i don't remember too much. i do recall some of the specifics of krakauer's account of the devil's thumb. when i read it, i'd just moved to alaska, and similar trips seemed right around the corner for me. that was 10 years ago, though, and the mountains are far away now.a cool, lyrical companion to Into the Wild is the book krakauer devotes many pages to: Everett Ruess - A Vagabond for Beauty. when i read it 10 years ago (from the library), i thought it was way out of print, but there are lots of used copies at amazon, i see... it's not the page-turning narrative style of krakauer, though.
