So it now looks as though Fitzgerald has obtained the cooperation of parts of SISMI, the Italian Secret Service, in providing documents relating to the source of the original Niger forgery. Seemingly there's a large conflict in SISMI between the old guard, who have heavy ties to P2 or Propaganda Due, and the New Guard, who were exemplified by Nicolo Calipari, the dashing general who was killed by US troops in Iraq, to much gnashing of teeth in progressive Italian circles.

To give you an idea what this could potentially lead to, Google: Licio Gelli; Propaganda Due; Roberto Calvi; and Banco Ambrosiano.
