Amid all the details of the CIA leak, an important point is being drowned out. It's the quesiton of WHY Rove & Co. would discredit Wilson to begin with. It can only be because they knew damn well that Iraq wasn't getting uranium from Niger and yet allowed the President to use it in his State of the Union address. If they knew it was false but wanted to hide that fact, could it mean that they doubted WMDs existed? Or worse, that they knew they probably didn't exist?
You see, it's not the leak or even the cover-up that really matters. It's the WHY they did it that should be the real focus. Mainstream media doesn't like to speculate and so far, nobody's talking. What we need is a real insider, a "Deep Throat" who can point the Washington Post in the right direction.
Congress gave up the money at a time when the whole subject of terrorism and national security was political dynamite. You're either with us or against us. What Congressman or Senator had the guts to question the expense when the President says they have WMDs and an intent to harm us? The President said it on the flimsiest of evidence, e.g., the words "slam dunk" by the CIA chief. Blame the CIA, but I don't really think they are that stupid either. At best, Bush is guilty of negligence. Did we really put someone in office who could be so careless with the truth? Or, was he in on it too? In other words, wouldn't Bush approve of discrediting anyone who stood in the way of his plans? Isn't that Rove's job description?
You follow the logic and then ask yourself: if they knew there probably weren't WMDs, then why go to war? And you reach the conclusion that we've always suspected: oil.
Sure, it's vital to our national interest. But Congress didn't approve the funds to protect the oil supply. But nearly 2,000 service men and women are dead because of it so far.
Honestly, I'm not sure if a case could be made that Bush lied to Congress. I think his team is smart enough to insulate him to the extent that they only presented him with information that could only bring one outcome. He made the decision they wanted based on what they told him. Unless it's worse than I thought and he was part of the deception which I would think is awfully difficult to prove (who would give him up?)
Who has the guts to stop this? Cindy Sheehan is made to look like a nut. They will crucify any Congressman who sticks his neck out. What we need right now is real leadership.
Iraq is going to fall into chaos one way or the other, in 3 years or 13 years from now, the only question is how many of our brave soldiers will die before we leave.
