This year's Mercury Music Prize nominees have been announced. The shortlist was chosen from an entry of over 170 albums by UK artists. The winner of the 2005 Prize will be announced at the Nationwide Mercury Prize Show on Tuesday 6 September. There will be programmes on Radio 1, BBC 2 and BBC 4.
The full list of nominees looks like this:
Antony and the Johnsons - I Am a Bird Now Bloc Party - Silent Alarm Coldplay - X&Y The Go! Team - Thunder,Lightning,Strike Hard-Fi - Stars of CCTV KT Tunstall - Eye to the Telescope Kaiser Chiefs - Employment The Magic Numbers - The Magic Numbers Maximo Park - A Certain Trigger M.I.A. - - Arular Polar Bear - Held on the Tips of Fingers Seth Lakeman - Kitty Jay
Now, everyone know about Coldplay, Kaiser Chiefs and KT Tunstall.. so thats them out the question.
Y'see the Mercury Prize, £20k to the winner, gets decided by oddly. Normally, its critically acclaimed albums that win, despite them not being that good. This year, except for Polar Bear, which was too experimental and boundary pushing for us, the entries are all stellar albums.
So who'll win this year? Its a tough one. We're going for either The Magic Numbers with their exquistic melodies and harmonies, or The Go! Team, for their explosion of sound that is "Thunder Lightning Strike". Interestingly, The Go! Team are the least favourite to win.. normally with the Mercury's that means they are likely to get the prize.
If you have got all the albums on the list, then now is your time to get them....
